Ready, Set, School…Get Organized for Back-To-School
It’s back-to-school time here in Texas! After raising three sons, I know firsthand that the transition from summer to a new school year can feel a little chaotic. New schedules, school supplies, sports, activities, homework, and early mornings can quickly take over the household.
Over the years, I’ve learned that a little preparation and organization can make a BIG difference. Here are five simple ways to get your home and family ready:
1. Create a Back-to-School Drop Zone
Give backpacks, shoes, and school papers a designated home near the entryway. A basket, wall hooks, or a small shelf can keep backpacks off the floor, while a paper tray or file system gives school papers a place to land. The goal is to make it easy for everyone to know where things go when they walk through the door.
2. Set Up a Lunch Prep Zone
Make packing lunches easier by keeping frequently used lunch supplies together and within easy reach. Gather lunch boxes, water bottles, reusable containers, napkins, and grab-and-go snacks in one area. When everything has a home, packing lunches becomes a routine instead of a daily scavenger hunt.
3. Create a Homework Spot
Choose a designated place for homework and keep the basics—paper, pencils, chargers, and other supplies—close by. Having a home for schoolwork helps prevent the daily search for supplies and makes it easier to get started.
4. Plan for the Week Ahead
Take a few minutes each weekend to review the family calendar, activities, appointments, lunches, and anything else coming up. Knowing what’s ahead can eliminate a lot of last-minute scrambling.
5. Make Mornings Easier
Lay out clothes, pack backpacks, and prepare lunches or snacks the night before. These small habits can save precious time—and help everyone leave the house with a little less stress.
As a professional organizer, I know that organization isn’t about having a perfect home. It’s about creating simple systems that make everyday life easier. And after raising three boys, I can tell you that anything that saves time and reduces morning chaos is worth it!
Here’s to a happy, organized, and successful school year!
